The Keefer family

Keefer's Cottage today
Christina and Godfried Keefer and their son Johann arrived in Swansea around the same time as the Wagner family in 1855.
They purchased a 10 acre plot, built Keefer's Cottage from the abundance of stone on the land and raised six more children: Hannah, Louisa, Christian, Karl, Christina, Alfred and George.
The Keefer family quickly gained respect in the community and in 1894 headlined in the district newspaper when Godfried & Christina celebrated their golden wedding anniversary and the marriage of their youngest daughter, Christina at a sit down luncheon in the stone shed behind the Cottage.
The event was described in the local newspaper as " one of the largest and most enthusiastic gatherings known here for many years ".

Old stables and shed
"...nearly one hundred people set down to a luncheon in honour of the occasion (which was laid out in the large barn of their residence) and after partaking of the good things provided complimentary, speeches were made by several gentlemen who expressed their gratification at being present to do honour to the guests of the celebration."
The event concluded with a ball at the Swansea Council Chambers " which was kept up until the small hours of the morning."
